  • Understanding Short Selling | by Wall Street Survivor

What is short selling? Most people think of investing as buying a stock (or other asset) and making money when its price goes up - but it’s also possible to make a profit when a stock price goes down. This process is called short selling (or shorting). Short selling isn’t all peaches and cream. There are opportunities for high returns, but as usual, these come with high risks. The big risk here is that there is no limit to your losses. When you buy a stock, you can only lose the amount that you invested. But when you short, your losses are infinite because there is theoretically no end to how high a stock’s price can rise. Short selling isn’t for everyone. It requires a lot of time and research, and a desire for high risks and high returns. Short selling is primarily used for speculator...

Please do not misconstrue this advice to do anything negative lol but hopefully you can see why I used the example of selling drugs, because drug dealing is dangerous and so is trading risky financial assets like penny stocks and forex (even options) so using a similar approach of caution is necessary. That means I sold someone the right to buy SNAP from me for $23 anytime on or before Oct 20, 2017. If SNAP stock price never hits $23 by Oct 20, 2017 then the person who bought the call option from me would never exercise their right. If that happened then I collect the $190 in premium and hold on to my stock. If the price of the stock went to $24 then I would be forced to sell it at $23 (loss of $100) but I would still make money because I collected the $190 premium. I only lose money if the stock goes past $25 because the option would be exercised and my premium of $190 would be less than my loss on the stock sale. buying a call option ...

Due to popular demand, I’ve decided to finally tackle the billion dollar beast. And while it’s not easy to have a conversation about startup equity without putting the faint of heart to sleep, it’s territory that simply can’t be overlooked. Because for any growth-oriented entrepreneur entertaining the idea of handing out equity in their company, the math absolutely matters… And one small misstep can be the difference between accelerated growth or the speed pass to startup hell. So if you’ve ever wondered what a healthy equity breakdown looks like for all key stakeholders (founders, advisors, investors and team members)... … then give this new video a quick spin. As you can see, used appropriately, equity can be an amazing way to incentivize team members and attract key advisors and investors. Like I did with Uber’s Travis Kalanick But if you don’t enter the conversation with clear knowledge of the right benchmarks to shoot for… … then you’re setting yourself up to either give too much away or lose talent and investors to other startups playing a much sharper numbers game. So get your numbers right. Make the right offers. And then step up to the plate and use equity for the growth accelerant it is. To splitting the pie… (and watching it grow), – Dan Don't forget to share this entrepreneurial advice with your friends, so they can learn too: https://youtu.be/hWA1b8owinc ===================== ABOUT DAN MARTELL ===================== “You can only keep what you give away.” That’s the mantra that’s shaped Dan Martell from a struggling 20-something business owner in the Canadian Maritimes (which is waaay out east) to a successful startup founder who’s raised more than $3 million in venture funding and exited not one... not two... but three tech businesses: Clarity.fm, Spheric and Flowtown. You can only keep what you give away. That philosophy has led Dan to invest in 33+ early stage startups such as Udemy, Intercom, Unbounce and Foodspotting. It’s also helped him shape the future of Hootsuite as an advisor to the social media tour de force. An activator, a tech geek, an adrenaline junkie and, yes, a romantic (ask his wife Renee), Dan has recently turned his attention to teaching startups a fundamental, little-discussed lesson that directly impacts their growth: how to scale. You’ll find not only incredible insights in every moment of every talk Dan gives - but also highly actionable takeaways that will propel your business forward. However, there are substantial differences between writing stock options and writing futures options. What it generally boils down to is leverage. Futures options offer more leverage and therefore can offer greater risk, but also greater potential rewards. But this same leverage opens up several other key advantages you may have never heard of. You're feeling pretty confident these days. First, you're doing awesome work at a great company, and second, your restricted stock units (RSUs) have vested. Now for the big question: When do you cash your shares out? If you're like most RSU recipients, you plan to hold on to your shares for a year before selling. That way, you'll avoid the very high tax rate on short-term capital gains, and pay the lower, long-term capital gains rate, right? Actually that's not how RSUs work. Amazingly, their tax treatment is something that few people in the tech industry understand. Your taxes are calculated and withheld by your company as soon as your units vest. And that tax cut is painful, by the way: Depending on where you live, the IRS and your state of residence could end up taking nearly 50% of your stocks value. So to be clear, there is no reason to wait a year before dipping into your vested stock. In fact, if you wait a year to sell your stock, and the stock price falls during that time, you'll feel foolish because you'll have paid taxes on the higher, original amount. The bottom line: You might as well go ahead and do whatever you're going to do with your vested stock. And for a lot of you, there are two choices: 1. Sell shares immediately; start living a little larger. 2. Keep shares and let them appreciate so you can one day live much, much larger. But allow me to suggest something crazy: Use your stock proceeds to create an actual, grown-up investment portfolio—one that contains a blend of different investments rather than just the stock of your company. Building diversified investment portfolios is standard practice among people who have money they don't want to lose. I could explain the academic theory about why diversification is the best way to balance risk and reward, but in the end, the logic is pretty simple: Don't keep all your eggs in one basket. And when you own nothing but company stock that is exactly what you're doing. I know what you're thinking—that this is loser talk. Your company's stock is only going to go up, and never down, right? And every share you keep is going to make you that much richer. There's one problem though: Even tech companies have long periods of flat or falling stock prices. And yes, they go bust, a la Pets.com, Webvan and Covad. I know, I know, your company is different. But when you limit your investments to the stock of any one company, that's really risky behavior. If your company runs into trouble, not only will your stock crater, but you might be out of a job as well. When your wealth is all in the form of your company's stock, you're not just putting all your eggs in one basket, you're living in that basket too. So consider this: You already have a good amount of wealth through your RSUs, and you're probably going to receive a lot more units over the years. You are already successful, and you will continue to be more and more successful. Now it's time to start protecting your wealth by creating a real, well-rounded investment portfolio. By all means buy yourself some nice things. And keep a bunch of your company stock so you can live the good life one day. But in the meantime, sit down with a financial advisor and talk about taking part of your stock and building a real investment portfolio. If you'd like to talk about RSUs, taxes or investing, don't hesitate to get in touch. The decision as to when to sell a stock is one of the most difficult components of investing While the the popular "buy-and-hold" approach to investing involves holding quality stocks for an indefinite time period, this does not mean there are not occasions in which to sell.

Watch more How to Start a Band videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/218024-How-to-Sell-Your-Music-on-iTunes If you're an unsigned musician, selling your music on iTunes might seem daunting. It's actually very easy! Step 1: Get your music ready Make sure your music is ready for public consumption. Don't forget cover art and any liner notes you want to include. Step 2: Get a UPC barcode Get a UPC barcode from a CD duplication company or online music distributor. Type "UPC code iTunes Store" into a search engine to find some options, which range in price from $10 to $30. Tip Read online reviews and ratings before you choose a UPC code vendor. Step 3: Find a distributor Find a distributor. To ensure you pick a legitimate company, look through several reviews of the company on various web sites. The distributor receives a percentage of every sale you make. Step 4: Protect your rights Protect your rights. Maintain ownership of your music by carefully reading all contracts to ensure you are only giving the company the right to distribute your music. If a contract has language about giving the distributor rights to your work, find another company. Tip Expect to pay a one-time sign-up fee, which sometimes includes a UPC code, plus a maintenance fee of about $1 per song and per album to keep your listings current. Step 5: Send your distributor your CD Send in your CD or digital files to the distributor you have chosen. Tip If you mail a physical CD to your distributor, make sure it's packaged exactly how you want it to be sold, including jewel case, cover art, booklet, CD art, and liner notes. Step 6: Check iTunes for your music Your music should automatically be placed in the iTunes Store within a few weeks. If you do not find it there, notify your distributor. Step 7: Renew your distribution deal Most distribution deals are only good for one year. To avoid having your music removed from iTunes and other online retailers, make sure you keep your account up to date. Step 8: Promote your music Just because your music is now available on iTunes doesn't mean it will be a best-seller. It's still up to you to promote your sound! Did You Know? One independent distributor has paid more than $105 million to artists since it was founded in 1997.

Short selling is primarily used for speculator looking to make a profit when the market goes down or investing looking to hedge their position. So back in 2015 I moved the family to Africa where both me and the Mrs got new jobs. Great place to live! But one of the major draw backs is a very poor internet connection. As we live in rural Africa finding a reliable connection is difficult. 3g is sketchy and their are no home isps available. Satellite and fiber are options but at a horrendous price! There are a few companies that offer Motorola canopy solutions and I negotiated a deal with one of those companies to rent a job lot of bandwidth. I then resell the bandwidth and distributed it across the number of homes on the compound that we live on. Here is a quick tutorial on how I did it. Don't forget to rate, subscribe and comment.

This is the last part of the series I made on how to trade penny stocks, forex and trade options effectively. I do not actually explain how to sell drugs, but I use it as an analogy to trading any of these financial assets. I could have used any other example in business, as you can substitute drugs for any sort of product/supply chain, however I thought it would be more humorous and easier to digest. Please do not misconstrue this advice to do anything negative lol but hopefully you can see why I used the example of selling drugs, because drug dealing is dangerous and so is trading risky financial assets like penny stocks and forex (even options) so using a similar approach of caution is necessary. Though it may be weird I am using an example like selling drugs, I will wrap this up by saying if you know one business, you know every business. Conducting a good business and actually learning how to sell and how to make money in one industry easily translates to most. There are producers and consumers, inventory, sourcing, supply chain, costs, risks, etc. If you can understand and master these, you can master any business. I know a lot of you have asked about e-commerce as well too, so here it is! These also relate in the same respects if you know what you are looking for. Best of all, this should encourage everyone from every walk of life that you can be a successful trader or make money online, regardless of your background. If you can sell drugs you can sell anything! (but don’t sell drugs.) Please SUBSCRIBE to the channel LIKE, SHARE, and COMMENT so I have questions to answers and things to talk about. Important Note: Options involve risk and are not suitable for all investors. For more information, please read the Characteristics and Risks of Standardized Options at https://content.etrade.com/etrade/estation/pdf/charrisk.pdf before you begin trading options. Moreover, there are specific risks associated with buying options including the risk of the purchased options expiring worthless. Because of the importance of tax considerations to all options transactions, the investor considering options should consult his/her tax adviser as to how taxes affect the outcome of covered call writing. I bought 100 shares of SNAP yesterday. In this video I sold 1 call option contract on SNAP with a strike of $23 and an expiration of Oct 20, 2017. I only lose money if the stock goes past $25 because the option would be exercised and my premium of $190 would be less than my loss on the stock sale. buying a call option gives an investor the right, but not the obligation, to buy a stock, at a specified price within a specific time period. selling a call option gives someone the right to buy stock from you at a specified price within a specific time period. this means you may be forced to sell stock to someone. buying a put option gives an investor the right, but not the obligation, to sell a stock, at a specified price within a specified time period. selling a put option gives someone the option to sell stock to you at a specified price within a specified time period. this means you may be forced to buy stock from someone. if you think a stock will go up you can: (i) buy the stock, (ii) buy a call option or (iii) sell a put option. if you think a stock will go down you can: (i) sell the stock if you own it, (ii) sell a call option or (iii) buy a put option. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Win money every Tuesday and Friday. http://www.engvid.com Learn business English vocabulary: Whether you are investing in a bull or a bear market, you should know the common terms and expressions that stock brokers and mutual fund managers will use to discuss your options. In this lesson, we will go over some of the more common terms you will need to familiarize yourself with if you want to become rich. Playing the stock market is a risky business, so be prepared! http://www.engvid.com/business-english-vocabulary-stock-market/ TRANSCRIPT Hi again. I'm Adam. Welcome back to www.engvid.com. Today we're going to look at some business English, with an introduction to investing. Now, what is investing? Investing is putting your money someplace with the hope that more money will come back to you later. Okay? So it's making money over time. Many ways to do it, but today we're going to look more specifically at the stock market. Now, before we begin to look at the stock market, we need to know all the different words that you will find in the stock market discussion. Of course, we have to look at "stocks". So: "stocks" and "shares". Now, many people get confused: what is a stock? What is a share? Realistically, these are basically the same thing, but subtle differences between the two. So, when a company decides that it wants to make money, so it can expand its business, it wants to raise capital. "Capital", it's a big word, there's lots of meanings to it. We're going to look at that a different time. But for our case, "capital" means money. They want to make money, they want to raise capital so they can grow their business. So what they do is they sell stock. Stock is a partial ownership of the company. So when you buy stock, you get a piece of paper, you get a certificate that says that you own part of this company. And because you own part of the company, you have certain rights. You can make... You can vote for changes, you can vote for things that the company should do. Now, what is a share? A share is an equal piece of the stock. So, for example, a company sells $100 worth of stock. That's the full amount of the ownership that the company makes available to the public. Now, this stock, this total amount, they divide into 100 shares. Okay? So you buy as many shares as you want of this stock. So because you have 100 shares, the full stock is $100. Each share is, of course, $1. You buy 10 shares, that mean... That means you're buying 10% of the available stock. You're buying $10 worth of shares. Now, you own stock, you own shares in the company. In that case, it's the same thing. Now, when you talk about stocks, you can say: "I own stocks." So let's go to this word quickly: "portfolio". Your portfolio is the collection of your investments. You may have stocks, you may have mutual funds, you may have bonds, you may have commodities, you may have real estate. You may have all kinds of different investments. If part of your portfolio is stocks, you say: "I have some stocks." It means I can have five company's stocks. But when you say: "I have shares", then you have shares of a company. Okay? I have stocks in 10 different companies. I have shares... I have 10% or I have 100 shares in this company, I have 50 shares in that company, I have 2,000 shares in that company. But all together, you have stock. Okay? So it's a total amount of the companies that you own. Now, if you want to buy stocks or trade stocks, if you want to buy and sell your shares, you can contact a "stockbroker". Okay? A broker is somebody who deals with trades; buys, sells stocks on the stock market. These days, you can just go online and find a "brokerage" which is a website or a company that lets you buy and sell your own stocks and shares. Okay. Next: we have "IPO", this is "Initial Public Offering". Sorry I'm a little bit off line, here. When a company decides: "Okay, we need to make more money. We need to raise capital. We need to sell some stock of our company." So the first time that they sell this stock, there's a big event, you know, like it's a big promotion, they have to market it, they have to tell the public: "Look, we're going to sell stock. Get ready." This is the initial public offering. The first time that they sell stock. We actually don't say: "Sell". They don't sell stock; they issue stock. And then the stock brokerage or the stockbrokers, they buy and sell the stock. Next: "ROI". This is a very important thing to consider. "Return On Investment". Before you buy anything, before you invest your money in anything, you always have to consider your ROI. How much money do you hope to get back? How much money do you think you will get back? Because at the end of the day, a stock market is a gamble. There's high-risk and there's low-risk companies. Your return on investment, obviously, you're hoping to make money. You hope to get a positive yield.
